Japanese culture is very prevalent here. From education to entertainment our sister city of Takaoka, Japan has influenced life and culture in Fort Wayne. One of the wonderful educational opportunities offered here is The Japanese Saturday School. Yes, that’s right, a Saturday School! The school opened in 2006 and is affiliated with Purdue University, Fort Wayne. It is located in the university complex within the Walb building.

The Japanese Saturday School provides two unique programs for residents in and around the Fort Wayne, Indiana area. The first program has been certified by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs and is designed for children of families who have relocated to northeast Indiana from Japan. This educational program allows students to continue studying a curriculum that meets the same standards they would be held to were they still living in Japan.

The second program is for students who speak little to no Japanese. It was designed primarily for those who will be seeking preparation for the Japanese Language Proficiency test (JLPT) but is equally beneficial to any young person who would like to learn more about the language and culture of Japan. Each student is evaluated and then placed into a class that matches their language proficiency. No previous knowledge of Japanese language is required.

Classes include not only speaking Japanese but reading and writing as well.

Both of these programs are designed for a wide range of ages (Kindergarten - Middle School). All of their classes are taught by native Japanese speakers!

The Japanese Saturday School also exposes its students to Japanese culture and hosts a New Year Celebration. The school also participates in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
